For the past year, I’ve had the pleasure of delivering presentations on career development to the Institute for Humane Studies. Here’s my latest, which offers six best practices to establish and protect your brand online:
1. Google yourself.
2. Manage negative links.
3. Create content.
4. Resist the urge to overshare.
5. Make LinkedIn your best friend.
6. Promote yourself.
Addendum (1/7/2013): On January 10, I’ll be delivering a version of this presentation to the Washington, DC, chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. On February 13, I’ll be speaking with Young Professionals in Foreign Policy.

Hi all – Just want to clarify something. What started out as 5 ways (see the URL of this webpage) soon became 6 (see the title of this post) and is now 7 (see the embedded presentation). The only question: when will #8 emerge? Sorry for any confusion.
Thanks for your kind words, Kevin! Hope you can make it to next month’s YPFP event.
Fantastic presentation!
Note: this presentation was originally titled, “5 Easy Ways to Brand Yourself Online.” I changed it to “5 Ways to Better Brand Yourself Online,” because (a) the ways aren’t easy, and (b) you already have a brand (whether you know it or not); hence the word “better.”
